Jai Opetaia to Fight Mikaelian for WBA Cruiserweight Title

Jai Opetaia will defend his Ring and Zuffa Boxing cruiserweight titles this Saturday in Las Vegas, as he faces fellow world champion Noel Mikaelian for the vacant WBA “regular” cruiserweight title. The highly anticipated bout at the T-Mobile Arena is a crucial step in Opetaia’s stated quest to unify all the 200-pound world championship belts, as reported by UFC.com.

The Cruiserweight Title Showdown

The fight, taking place at the T-Mobile Arena, sees Opetaia, with a perfect 30-0 record including 23 knockouts, face what UFC.com describes as arguably his toughest test yet in Mikaelian, who holds a professional record of 28-3 with 12 KOs. The bout serves as the co-feature to the Ryan Garcia vs. Conor Benn card.

While Mikaelian initially arrived during fight week as the WBC cruiserweight champion, the WBC refused to put its belt on the line. Instead, the WBA approved the fight for its vacant “regular” cruiserweight title just hours before the fighters were due to enter the ring, according to Boxing News 24. This arrangement means the winner will hold a WBA title, though David Benavidez currently possesses the WBA “super” title in the same division, adding complexity to the championship landscape.

Opetaia’s Undisputed Ambition

Opetaia has been open about his long-standing goal to become undisputed cruiserweight champion. His career has seen him compete in 10 straight world championship bouts, with only two opponents in his last nine – former champion Mairis Breidis (twice) and Brandon Glanton – managing to go the distance. His most recent outing saw him defeat the durable Glanton to add the Zuffa Boxing cruiserweight title to his collection.

Looking beyond his challenge with Mikaelian, Opetaia has explicitly set his sights on David Benavidez’s recently claimed belts. Benavidez, who has soared in the pound-for-pound rankings, was elevated to WBC light-heavyweight champion last year before moving up to cruiserweight, where he secured a dominant victory over Gilberto Ramirez. Opetaia told Boxing News Online that he doesn’t “even chase names,” but rather “wants the belts” to become undisputed, expressing a mutual respect for Benavidez while making it clear “the best should fight the best.”

A Las Vegas Debut and Strategic Challenge

The fight marks Opetaia’s debut in a major Las Vegas arena, an opportunity he described to UFC.com as “awesome” and the culmination of a lifelong focus on boxing since the age of eight. He anticipates a challenging encounter with Mikaelian, a two-time 200-pound champion. Opetaia emphasised the need for adaptability during the fight, stating, “you can think of a gameplan, but when you jump in that ring and you get punched in the face… the whole game plan changes… So, it’s about adapting in the ring.”

How to Watch in the UK

For boxing fans in the United Kingdom and Ireland, the Jai Opetaia vs. Noel Mikaelian fight will be streamed live on DAZN PPV. Viewers in the United States can watch the co-main event on Paramount+.
